Character and Personality

The following paragraphs concern the study of JIM's personality, as induced by the positions of the planets and Rising sign. Some of the character traits mentioned may seem completely contradictory and incompatible. This is because the rough-hewn personality is a rarity. Usually, individuals are made up of a subtle orchestration of many different tones or aspects. However, serious introspection or detailed analysis should make it possible to distinguish the opposing or diverging images comprising JIM's overall character, and perhaps, in time, find the best and most harmonious way to integrate them.

JIM's personality is mind-oriented. He understands and relates to the world around him and himself via the medium of thought and intellect. Memorization, comparison, analysis, and the verbalization of his mental imagery are his favorite activities. He seeks to extend his personality by a mental outreach to a multitude of new ideas and factors, becoming acquainted with an ever-increasing variety of facets of human nature. Thus, language and symbolic expression, written or oral, are his primary resources in life, although they are also potential pitfalls. His eloquence, wit, and verve, his mastery of language, unquestionably give him power over other people (via communication) and things (science and technique). But taken to extremes, this faculty may lead to incoherent babbling. It is thus vital for JIM to find an outlet for his flow of verbal expression, he must explain, communicate, and speak. If it is dammed up, he will undoubtedly suffer. His flow of words is the expression of his vital energy, the proof that he is alive and well. If he is forced to be silent, he would be cut off from the bonds that hold him together. A kind of duality or split personality might emerge... remember Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? " They " were a classic case. For all of the above reasons, JIM is naturally gregarious and sociable. He makes friends quickly and easily. His contacts and networks are important to him, because they enable him to evolve; they are a source of self-fulfillment and identification. Any form of play is also important to him, and only severe depression will deprive him of his playfulness. Finding a partner for play within himself in many cases, he sometimes amuses himself by acting out a variety of roles on the stage of life, just for the fun of it. His animation and wit give him a talent for improvisation and adaptation. However, adaptability is a two-bladed sword. He is liable to find himself in a superficial bind, having jettisoned certain important ideas in order to move about more freely. JIM is also sensitive, but his emotions and feelings are sometimes subject to the scrutiny and censorship of his intellect. Thus, he cannot free himself to the strength of great passions and energies without idealizing them to a certain degree and giving them intellectual resonance. Wary of his irrational instincts and urges, he tends to control or repress them. But he will have to learn that the intellect is not omnipotent, especially where instinct is concerned. Inhabiting a complex inner world, JIM sometimes feels vulnerable, due to his emotionalism and sensitivity to the aggressions of the outer world. Because he relies first and foremost on his adaptability and agility to wriggle out of trouble, he may, on certain occasions, make rather dubious compromises with himself - all the more likely if his moral fiber is made of wax, as is often the case, instead of steel. The weaknesses he must overcome are instability, wishy-washiness, a lack of determination and coherence in his thought.

Due to the influence of Gemini rising, JIM has an essentially intellectual personality. He has an avid and curious mind which automatically collects and codifies knowledge. His flexible and lively spirit is especially talented for communication, either oral or written. He enjoys movement and change, having no trouble adapting himself to new situations. Other people enjoy his original ideas, wit, and sense of humor, but they are likely to criticize his nonchalance, frivolity, and lack of a deep commitment. Indeed, JIM is far too self-centered to develop a real interest in anyone besides himself, and he is afraid of his emotions. Only time and maturity will enable him to stop running away from emotional involvement. He is best matched with Sagittarius partners; they are likely to help him channel his wide-ranging curiosity into more people-oriented values and pursuits.

JIM needs movement. He is a talented communicator.

JIM has a strong personality; he is sometimes a little self-centered. His fate is in his own hands!

At the time of JIM's birth, the Sun and Rising Signs were both passing through the constellation of Gemini (the Twins). Both are ruled by the element AIR, which augurs a certain cohesiveness for his personality. A summary of the various clues mentioned above provide JIM's personality profile; the following key words distill the essence of his character and indicate certain contradictions which may create tension:

Need for contact - Mental agitation - Frivolity - Dilettantism - Immaturity - Communication - Inner duality.

JIM may have noticed his life has been destabilized by the fact he has two inner selves. It may be difficult for him to concentrate or organize his thoughts. He is so receptive and vulnerable to influences around him, be they positive or negative, that he may lack resolve. He would benefit greatly by learning to structure his plans and behavior while leaving his native enthusiasm intact. He is an extremely high-strung, high-energy person, and he must be careful not to expend his energy too quickly. The most valuable resources he has at his disposal are his enthusiasm and his constructive powers. In his dealings with others as a member of society, he would contribute greatly by communicating his inspiration. He senses valuable ideals and messages which he must explain to the less sensitive, clearly and accurately.

Born in the three days after the rising of the New Moon, JIM is said to be a " New Moon " lunar type. This " soli-lunar " configuration gives him a subjective character, somewhat impulsive and sometimes emotive. Generally, he does not see the world in objective terms; instead, he bases his attitude on the feelings various situations arouse inside him. Likewise, in human relationships, he tends to project his imaginary reality onto others instead of seeing them for what they are. As a result, his judgements and reasoning are sometimes deprived of perspective. He should make an effort to refrain from overinterpreting other people's actions, because, being the product of his imagination in most cases, his interpretations are mistaken. If he applies himself to listening more openly, people may reveal their deeper motivations. He'll be happier and more effective as a result.

Due to the influence of the lunar dominant on his birth chart, JIM's character is strongly attached to his image of his mother. He did not (or will not) cut the umbilical cord easily, and he will always identify with his childhood memories, happy or unhappy. His mother (or a mother figure), was probably strongly protective of him. Psychologically attached to his need for security, he is convinced that he may be overpowered by the demands of adult life. No matter how much he matures and evolves, he will never be out of contact with his inner child. He is sensitive and vulnerable, moody and somewhat easily swayed; subjective and nonchalant. His inner psychic activity is dynamic: imagination, memory, dreams, sensations, and feelings occupy his mind.

Temperament

The graph below reveals the various influences on JIM's nature in relation to the percentage value of each element. These values were calculated according to the number of planets and the hierarchical position of each one (dominant, luminary, etc.). The basic personality tendencies as described here will no doubt be counteracted to some degree by the environmental, psychological, or emotional needs outlined in the next chapter. Nevertheless, they form the roots of his psyche, anchoring it as it grows and develops.

JIM experiences his inner life as a process of growth and maturation, nurtured by his involvement with others and the positive and negative encounters this generates.

JIM's tendency to introversion inclines him to live inside himself, amid his inner world. He is apt to listen to his subjectivity, his intuition, and his secret opinions rather than reason and logic.

JIM's uppermost concern is his personal, subjective interest. Because the development of his personal identity requires great individual freedom of action, he tries to free himself from outer restraints and limitations. Psychologically self-centered, he remains fairly detached from the social world; he reduces such commitments to the strict minimum. Individualistic and egocentric, he derives his feelings of inner security from his ability to command his will and handle his personal involvement's freely and openly.

JIM is self-centered and sees everything in relation to himself. Individualistic and fairly egotistical, he finds he is rarely of the same opinion as others, and may tend to isolate himself from the outer world. On the other hand, he is gifted with the ability to concentrate on whatever subject is really important to him, which would enable him to acquire expertise in any professional domain he chose. But first he would have to overcome his initial subjectivity.

Thought, intuition, and inner perceptions predominate in JIM's psyche. Open and curious, optimistic and enthusiastic, he is eager to participate in everything happening around him. His affections are lively and spontaneous, but may be more intellectual than sensual. In a partner, he would seek a source of mutual spiritual or artistic inspiration. Light-hearted and perhaps even fickle, he never allows himself to be overcome by outer realities or emotions. In its most exaggerated form, his buoyancy borders on indifference.

The numerous contradictions and tensions which are a recurrent feature of JIM's astral theme balance each other out and endow him with a stable, well-tempered character, after all. Indeed, they are especially likely to protect him from unsolvable frustrations and, in terms of reality, will enable him to acquire a certain social and professional success without too much effort on his part. At that point, he must be careful not to take on too many responsibilities. His confidence in his ability to accomplish things may make him spread himself too thin.

The behavioral roles and models JIM adopts are based mainly on mental processes. He determines his purposes in life after careful reflection; he is attracted by intellectual theories and systems. A mobile personality, he is skilled at meeting people and may spontaneously establish very close friendships, even if they are not usually lasting. Impressionable and subject to the pressures of his environment, his relationships, both private and professional, are relatively unstable.

Psychological Analysis

The following psychological study is a " blind " analysis which cannot take into consideration factors proper to JIM's social background or education. Nevertheless, it describes the basic structure and dynamic of his psyche as the result of an interplay of various influences; that is, without confining it to certain categories or arbitrarily putting a label on it. Certain contradictions may appear, but they are an integral part of the paradoxes and ambivalence of his nature. It is impossible for us to predict which tendency will win out: that will depend on JIM's decision.

Consciousness and The ideal of Self:

JIM is searching for stability; he wants to find a firm, unchanging structure for his life. But his efforts to achieve this ideal are often vain, because unconsciously, he is also inhabited by the opposite desire. Every time he reaches what he believes to be a good balance, he realizes he wants something entirely different. He should become aware that the concepts of stability and balance are difficult to apply to life. By definition, life is movement, change, and perpetual instability.

Born under a New Moon (when the Moon and Sun were in the same part of the sky), JIM enjoys a positive balance between the conscious and unconscious aspects of his psyche. His determination and sensitivity balance one another and work together harmoniously: his inner life contributes to the relationships with other people which make up his outer life. His parents or teachers probably gave him the type of education which was adapted to his personality, which enabled him to develop normally. As a result, his personality is basically balanced, which, of course, does not mean that his life is devoid of little asperities. Generally, the goals he sets for himself correspond to his skills. Without giving the matter much thought, he tends to follow prevailing trends and behaves in a conventional enough way. He is subjective, and sees the world according to his own perceptions instead of the way it really is.

JIM is extremely vigorous and energetic, and has an immense need to assert his individuality. His attitudes and actions are actually motivated by an unconscious desire for power. They puzzle the people close to him, who cannot understand whether his behavior is the result of pure selfishness or merely of an excess of energy. Although JIM is lively, alert, and determined, he will not be able to fulfill his ambitions unless he modifies his personality. He is too easily distracted from his goals by futile competition or opportunities to exhibit his power. He has a short and sometimes violent temper, and must learn to control his impulsiveness, which exposes him to a great deal of unnecessary conflict.

JIM has a great potential for creative, constructive accomplishments; however, it is sometimes difficult for him to gain access to this part of himself. He is confident in himself and life, but may tend to be nonchalant and lazy; he sometimes needs a little stimulation to get himself rolling and take some initiative. His optimism and inner certainty do not always drive him to give his utmost efforts to achieve a goal. The communications skills he possesses are an advantage as well as a handicap. Although he makes use of his theatrical gifts, convincing eloquence, and ability to listen, they sometimes arouse dislike. The best careers for him would be teaching, communications, philosophy, the legal profession, theater, and public relations.

JIM enjoys sharing and has a constant need for contact with other people. He tends to be free and uninhibited in his relations with other people, rarely allowing himself to be influenced by convention or prevailing opinion; he associates with whomever he pleases. This attitude makes his life refreshing and exciting, and he is never bored. In career terms, he is quite gifted for any field related to communication, where his intellectual singularity and lively wit would make him an amazing hit. He would also be likely to succeed in any activity where the work required a multidisciplinary approach: teaching, advertising, politics, etc.

JIM is extremely sensitive and receptive, and tends to live in osmosis with his surroundings. His individuality almost seems to be diluted in a flood of sensations and impressions which are continually washing over him, and he sometimes finds it difficult to communicate his feelings to other people or engage in any structured, analytical thought. This may stem from a misunderstanding with his teachers when he was a child. Unable to understand their disciplinary measures or authority, he may have withdrawn into himself in self-defense. It was then that he constructed his rich inner life, the part of him they could not invade, and cut many of his ties to the outside. Because he enjoyed indulging in his inner life, it may have been difficult for him to acquire an objective vision of reality. As a result, even today, he tends to create imaginary problems for himself, regardless of the objective facts outside. Although his imagination is a source of inspiration and intuition, his fluid inner structure and organization sometimes make it difficult for him to grasp the essence of his dreams and share them with other people. He is not at all combative, and this tends to hinder his efforts to fit into society and assert himself productively. He is likely to prefer fantasy to reality, but his refusal to abandon his unattainable dreams is a psychological trap he has fallen into without realizing it. He must understand that by running away from his obligations and commitments, he only increases the feelings of guilt and incompetence which made reality so distasteful in the first place. Once he frees himself from this pernicious process, he has a great deal of potential for fulfilling himself in the outer world, either by devoting himself to some sort of social work or by cultivating his considerable artistic talents.

Adaptation and Sensitivity:

Because JIM's personality is ruled by his mind, he needs intellectual stimulation in order to feel fulfilled. He is always on the move, in search of new contacts. Curious about all sorts of different subjects, he takes care to inform himself about many things. He enjoys conversation and communication, and hopes to be admired for his talent and wit. Due to his having such a wide variety of interests, however, he can be something of a dilettante, and his thinking may sometimes lack discipline.

JIM has a keen and lively intellect. He enjoys playing with words, ideas, and also images. However, it sometimes seems difficult to him to keep his feelings from mingling with his reason. Usually, his emotions influence his judgment, or, on the other hand, his intellect intrudes on his emotional reactions.

JIM is extremely sensitive and perceptive. He luxuriates in tenderness and gentleness more than violent passion. Because he abhors any form of violence, and is disturbed by the absence of harmony, he has developed a tact and diplomacy which make his relations with others smooth and easy.

JIM has a sensitive and extremely volatile personality. He may fly off the handle unexpectedly, which is liable to disrupt not only his relationships, but also his business or career plans. He is subject to cyclical energy flows, and goes from periods of feverish activity to periods of withdrawal and introspection, or from phases of more or less violent rages and conflict to times of apathy and passive acceptance. The aggressive element in his behavior may be explained by emotional problems he may have experienced in infancy: his mother, or a mother-figure, may have had an energetic and volatile personality. His aggressiveness tends to be directed most often at the women with whom he associates.

Although his demeanor is cold and distant, JIM is extremely sensitive. In some cases, his rather austere and rigid behavior and his refusal to yield too readily to sentimentality discourage others from being too demonstrative of their tenderness and affection. He has spells of melancholy in which he does not feel worthy of being loved, and tends to forbid himself any emotional fulfillment whatsoever. An austere or somewhat traumatic childhood experience may be the source of this behavior. He may have suffered rejection in his infancy, and, as a result, lacked the parental love which is essential to the cohesion of a personality and identity. In order to feel secure, and to protect himself from ever suffering rejection or abandonment again, he withdrew into himself and developed his aloofness as a defense mechanism. When he finally lets down his defenses and allows himself to express his feelings, he tends to become impassioned and exalted, and may be a bit demanding of his partner. He is fairly introverted and egocentric, and has a powerful sense of his own identity.

JIM's intellect is sometimes haunted by disturbing philosophical anguishes and a need for security. As a result, his adaptation to life and his surroundings is somewhat complicated, and his relationships may be plagued by conflict. Certain inhibitions may sometimes inhibit his intellectual activity.

Because he discovered his individuality early in life, JIM quickly developed an original and independent identity. His first taste of liberty may have led him to challenge the education and values he received from family and class tradition, and he was able to forge a strong, original personality and philosophy. His relationships are usually free of conflict, because he is able to reconcile his need for independence with his desire for affection. However, his partners should be open and lively people, able to keep pace with him in his rapid evolution. He has an inspired and extremely lively wit, and a brisk interest in the future, technological progress, and new lifestyles. He would be especially successful in communications-related careers like journalism, film, TV, radio, and advertising. Although he is an individualist, he has a powerful desire to contribute to the evolution of society and better its development.

JIM's sensitivity and emotions are sometimes in conflict with his instincts. This inner discord makes him a fairly complicated relationship partner, and his behavior sometimes strikes others as mysterious or baffling. Moody and totally unpredictable, he is liable to switch from one extreme attitude to the opposite. Sexuality is an important part of JIM's life, and his relationships are most often motivated by his desires. Nevertheless, due to his unconscious inner battle, he does not often succeed in reconciling and fulfilling his emotional and sexual needs. Due to the strength of his instincts, passion may overwhelm him and drag him into situations he cannot always control, which intermingle erotic ecstasy and anguish, guilt and aggressiveness.

Love and Sensuality:

JIM enjoys captivating people with the elegance and ease of his expression. He is a witty and engaging flirt, an avid player of the game of love. As a result, the history of his affections is liable to be episodic, a long series of chapters about conquests or fleeting love affairs. He may carry on some love relationships by writing letters.

JIM's birth chart indicates an emotional function which is usually expressed carefully and reasonably. Distrustful of his emotional urges and somewhat wary of his feelings, JIM tries to rid himself of all partiality, and tries to get some perspective and distance before making an emotional commitment.

JIM's personality has a lot of sparkle and seductiveness, but he sometimes turns out to be somewhat unstable and shallow in his partners' eyes. From conquest to conquest, affair to affair, his emotional life may be a series of brief flashes of love which prove to be disappointingly fleeting. But, one day, he may allow himself to be subjugated by a woman with a strong personality and a great deal of influence on him.

As we suggested earlier, JIM is fairly indecisive about his emotions. Although he has engaged in a variety of experiments in order to know himself and his preferences better, he still finds himself unable to make a commitment. He tends to be somewhat happy-go-lucky, yielding to whatever opportunity circumstances present, and may maintain several relationships simultaneously. It may not necessarily be easy for him to establish a lasting commitment, but it is not impossible.

JIM is hypersensitive, and tends to relive the anxieties, apprehensions, and romantic absolutes of his first love relationships, which occurred around the ages of 13-14 years or 20-21 years. He is exquisitely thin-skinned, almost agonizingly so, but almost completely barricaded behind a layer of aloofness and chill; his relationship aspirations are both impossible to attain and despotically inclined. He will not settle for anything less than eternal commitment, total harmony, and absolute loyalty. This rather excessive demand is the sign of an emotional injury and an occasional inability to express his romantic feelings and engage himself in experience. JIM is sometimes presumed to be emotionless and cold, even by those close to him. He usually hides his emotional reactions or does not even allow them to reach the level of his consciousness, in an effort to protect his sensitivity, which he sees as his weak point. He is fairly vulnerable, even in the intimacy of a stable and established relationship, and constantly needs reassurance. Usually, he will disguise his strong feelings as a kind of possessiveness or even jealousy. Certain misfortunes may arouse a negative emotional state inside him, and he feels unworthy of the love which is lavished on him. This psychological prohibition which rules over all of his desires and affects should loosen with the passage of time; likewise, his fear of approaching and accosting the other will diminish. As a result, the second part of his romantic life will be more rewarding. In any case, if he wants to experience a harmonious love relationship and gratify himself emotionally, the defense mechanisms he has elaborated to make himself inaccessible to others will have to be dismantled. Any profound relationship will also require that he learn how to forget himself occasionally in the other.

From the outside, JIM seems to be detached and aloof, but on the inside he is an extremely complex individual, full of contradictions. Because he sometimes feels vulnerable emotionally, he tries to control not only his own feelings and urges, but may also strive to manipulate those of his partners. He aspires to a profound and enduring spiritual unity, but at the same time, the idea of abandoning himself and yielding to the other terrifies him completely. This anguish may be a source of rather extreme behavior patterns and a somewhat selfish attitude which could damage the relationship. Because he is guarded and somewhat secretive, he tends to be suspicious and is especially uneasy about spontaneous intimacy, although he is fascinated by sexuality. Within the privacy of the couple, he will not express his feelings unless he is subject to some tension. Life may be peppered with frequent crises and feuds, arguments and spats which usually act as erotic provocation. This derivation of eroticism from anxiety tends to be one of the fundamental characteristics of JIM's emotional and sexual functioning. As a result, he is likely to be attracted by stormy and complicated relationships.

Mental and intellect:

JIM has a lively wit which gives him great agility and scope, and a broad field of consciousness which enlivens his curiosity and makes him love variety and change. His mind is alert and his speech is full of verve, humor, and sometimes impudence. These abilities are great resources in communication, discussion, and debate. He is a storehouse of information and ideas of every kind, and delights in manipulating words and concepts, discovering new things, and sharpening his memory for trivial facts. This mental agitation sometimes makes him scattered, however, or lacking in coherence and discipline.

JIM tries to shun subjectivity and be as objective as possible. His thoughts are usually structured, and his reasoning, based on objective facts or experience, usually relates to practical goals.

In relations with other people, JIM's behavior is usually kind and benevolent. He exerts a certain charm, knows how to speak persuasively and convincingly, and is adept at smoothing the asperities of what he has to say when it is necessary. This aspect of his personality is a great advantage to him socially; however, in situations where he must either compete or deal with direct conflict and hostility, he may be somewhat at a loss for how to behave. He has an undeniable gift for oratory which could be applied to a communications-related occupation or to artistic expression (as a stage or screen actor). Writing and dance, two other arts which associate expression and movement, might also be fields in which he would excel.

JIM has a structured mind and penetrating intelligence, but his thought processes tend to be somewhat plodding. This slow pace may be the consequence of some failure or humiliation during his formative years. He is fairly inhibited and pessimistic, and tends to doubt in himself and his intellectual skills despite his undeniable gifts as a thinker. He should become aware that his thought patterns and habits are the sign that he is on the brink of a really big breakthrough which will give him an understanding of the complexity of things and phenomena; however, it will take time and effort. His mind is deep and accurate, and is attracted by the essence of things and their fundamental structure. As a result, he is particularly suited to the study of mathematics, architecture, engineering, or perhaps even politics. His contribution to society will probably be most lasting and effective in the field of knowledge and expertise. Whatever career he chooses, he should learn to work alone, because he tends to be uncomfortable in some surroundings. He will also have to learn to conquer his impatience, because he tends to waste time agonizing over deadlines and schedules. Moreover, his lack of self-confidence causes him to be fairly conventional and respectful of time-honored ways. Instead, he should find the courage to question his convictions and those of his social class.

As an intellectual, JIM has a curiosity so lively it borders on the inquisitorial. His interest in dark secrets and hidden knowledge leads him to do all sorts of arcane research. He is both sensitive and pragmatic, with an intuition so keen he seems to be able to sniff out and expose the complex, mysterious inner workings of both systems and individuals. Although he is sometimes unable to express the findings of his investigations clearly, he is nevertheless an expert in symbols, hieroglyphics, runes, and other codes and ciphers. Rather ironic and sometimes cynical, he strikes out with his venomous wit the way a poisonous snake neutralizes its prey. His doubts and uncertainties may sometimes lead to nearly unbearable anxiety or anguish. Moreover, the people he associates with may sometimes have a negative influence on him, and he should be wary of questionable or illicit transactions. He is more prone to misjudgment than others, especially in matters concerning the exchange of large sums of money.

Energy and Ability to take Action:

JIM's vitality and combativeness emerge in an unpredictable and sometimes chaotic way. Ruled by his emotiveness, but also inspired by his keen intuition, his behavior and approach to the business of life sometimes baffle those close to him. He is quite comfortable in a relationship due to his instinctive understanding of human relations. He quickly establishes intense and lasting friendships.

JIM has sometimes has poor control over his energy, and does not budget his vigor and effort to yield the most benefit. Because he is sometimes overwhelmed by his emotional outbursts, he sometimes behaves in an erratic, impulsive, and unpredictable way; on the other hand, he may feel paralyzed and incapable of taking action. This dysfunction is produced by an opposition between his deepest desires and his sense of duty. It may be caused by the memory of a conflict with parental or academic authority in his formative years. Perhaps, in his adolescence, his teachers or other people with some power over him forced him to act against his will; or, on the other hand, they may have deprived him of the possibility of engaging in an activity which was crucial to him at the time. Because at one time the part of him which expresses desire instinctively and spontaneously, the libido, was defeated or contradicted by the paternal authority figure, his actions and emotional impulses may be ruled by his superego, or the inner image he has developed of the Law and the reality principle: his inner father. As a result, in situations which revive the old, unconscious injury, his energy may vanish; his powerful superego is also the reason why people sometimes criticize him for a lack of spontaneity. But they are mistaken. This complex may actually work towards a certain perfection in his activity in relation to the imperfections and ups and downs of reality. To become more conscious of the scope of the past conflict, JIM will have to engage in a careful, logical, and detached analysis of the relations he maintained with parental authority as an adolescent. Although he is fairly aggressive and authoritarian in the family circle, he sabotages his career plans completely, fleeing from professional responsibility and neglecting his ambitions. This attitude is liable to be a source of guilt, which tends to discredit him in his own eyes and inhibit his energy. To escape from this vicious cycle, he should realize that only foresight and careful reflection and planning will enable him to be effective and reach his goals.

Dynamic but also individualistic at times, JIM is compelled to experiment with his own limitations. In all his activities, even the most routine matters, he seeks self-sufficiency and freedom. He cannot envisage not being his own boss and not following his own purposes. This attitude, which is softened only by the fear of material or emotional loss, is sometimes prejudicial to him. Nevertheless, his willingness to take risks, to intervene immediately, combined with his his quick reflexes and his ability to mobilize all his energy instantaneously, are great advantages to anyone in an independent or freelance career. His profile is especially well matched to risky ventures like cutting-edge businesses, research, trade, and engineering. However the lack of forethought his impetuous behavior implies is sometimes the source of errors. Misjudgment, failure to foresee, and erroneous predictions may cause blunders or strategic fumbles which force him to switch paths or goals. This introduces an undesirable element of instability or incoherence into his life. Moreover, his haste and recklessness may expose him to some misfortunes.

Psychological Profile

JIM sometimes lacks energy. He is fairly apathetic and passive, preferring sluggishness to movement, and leniency to initiative. The greater the ratio, the more exaggerated his tendency to laziness will be.

JIM has a great deal of sang-froid; his inner calm and stolidity predispose him to tasks which require self-control and perseverance. He does not readily display his emotions, even in the most hair-raising situations.

JIM feels, thinks, and acts as a function of objective circumstances. The outer world is the only one which counts for him, and his awareness is entirely focused on it. He is rarely moody or preoccupied, and may sometimes be wary of his subjectivity.

JIM has a phlegmatic personality, and his responses to various outer stimuli are sometimes postponed or delayed. He is fairly slow to initiate an activity, if not laboriously so, but once he begins he is steady and determined.

It is sometimes difficult for JIM to focus his concentration on a single subject; however, he is extremely open, and always tries to learn and integrate new information and new ideas. He is more cross-disciplinary than specialist, and his centers of interest are fairly widespread and varied.

JIM's objectivity in perception and behavior could, in the best of cases, lead to generosity and altruism.

JIM has a marked ability to adapt to others, to adopt prevailing attitudes, and integrate himself into groups. He is quite community-minded, with a true sense of team spirit, and gives the best of himself when working in unison with a group. Cooperation is his forte.

JIM has a tendency to yield, to follow, to put up with situations, and follow other people's orders. He is modest and unassuming, with a need for protection and a tendency to be dependent.

JIM sometimes doubts in himself and his skills; his lack of self-confidence makes him fairly shy and self-effacing. Feelings of inferiority may interfere with his ability to take action, or, on the contrary, may propel him into action if he sees a possibility of reward or compensation.

JIM is often in a negative frame of mind. Undermined by his fears and his craving for security, he cannot always see the sunny side of life.

JIM is chiefly interested in tangible facts and realistic details. A pragmatic personality, he never loses sight of the utilitarian or practical aspects of things.

JIM's approach to life is usually methodical and disciplined: he plans out his projects, and organizes his schedule to yield maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

JIM's thought processes are usually clear, orderly, and linear; his reasoning obeys the dictates of deductive or discursive logic, and relates to explicit goals.

JIM's mind is especially perceptive of details. To arrive at a global perception, a vision of the whole, he proceeds gradually, piece by piece, aspect after aspect, in a fairly linear fashion.

JIM is inclined to arrange, classify, sort, catalogue, and compartmentalize, in all his life activities as well as his work.

JIM's behavior usually obeys his momentary whims, and he allows himself to be inspired by his imagination or whatever situation arises. His openness and spontaneity give him the scope to be skillful, ingenious, or shrewd, rising to whatever the immediate circumstances require.

JIM continually needs excitement and action. He is fairly fluctuating and faithless, and may abandon a project or commitment as soon as boredom sets in, to move on to a more exciting experience.

Ideal Partner

JIM's Sun is located at 11° GEMINI. His masculinity and drive for psycho-sexual fulfillment would best be aroused by the femininity of a person whose Moon is at 05/17° GEMINI or SAGITTARIUS.

This relationship could yield a high degree of psychological compatibility and powerful mutual attraction. The physical and psychological reality of JIM's masculinity will exert a magnetic pull over the sensitivity, receptivity, tenderness, and other feminine qualities of his partner.

JIM's Moon is located at 21° GEMINI. His ideal match is a partner with the Sun at 15/27° GEMINI or SAGITTARIUS.

This type of partner would be particularly well-matched to his underlying psychic and unconscious aspirations. The secret ideal this person cherishes of the perfect masculine partner would be aroused; it would harmonize beautifully with JIM's ideal imaginary woman. This great psychic compatibility is the result of a harmonious relationship between the Moon of the masculine chart and the Sun of the feminine one. It is propitious to a rich flow of energies between the most hidden and secret parts of both people. They are linked by an unconscious emotional bond.

JIM's Planet Venus is located at 25° GEMINI. His ideal match is a partner with Mars at 20/30° GEMINI or SAGITTARIUS.

This type of partner would complement him perfectly in emotional and sentimental terms. This person would reflect and fulfill JIM's ideal of feminine sensuality to the greatest desgree. Moreover, her ideal imaginary male partner would resonate lastingly with JIM's own psychic projections of his feminine ideal. This positive relationship between the unconscious sexual yearnings of both partners would be likely to yield sensual relations of a tantalizingly mysterious and secret nature.

Because he has a taste for the game of seduction, JIM may go from conquest to conquest, until he finally becomes dissatisfied with his unstable love life and makes a more definitive choice. In this case, he would be wise to choose this type of woman. Brilliant, witty, and amusing, she will sparkle with the excitement he needs. His instability, unpredictability, and secret vulnerability will delight her. The intellectual exchange and communication between the two will be rich and fulfilling.

JIM's Planet Mars is located at 17° PISCES. His ideal match is a partner with Venus at 11/23° PISCES or VIRGO.

This type of partner would be especially well-suited to his physical and sensual urges. His sexual longings, desires, and passion would harmonize beautifully with this person's femininity and receptivity. Her eyes, her lips, her skin, her hair... everything about her would arouse his ardor and sharpen his desire. This type of planetary relationship is favorable to true mutual fulfillment of a stable, physical bond.

Professional Diagnosis

A professional forecast is the result of a complex analysis. The human personality is so full of complications and contradictions that a given individual is quite likely to succeed in a field quite other than his primary sphere of competence; likewise, it is altogether possible for him to fail in what he had always been told was his natural calling. Moreover, psychological compensation mechanisms, which are entirely unpredictable at the outset, can make drastic changes in an individual's innate abilities (i.e. Toulouse-Lautrec's determination to succeed as an artist despite his physical handicap). Sociological data have demonstrated at length that an individual's destiny is overwhelmingly influenced by the social and cultural background into which he is born. But we cannot take such important criteria into consideration here. The intention of this forecast is to point out JIM's true motivations, and the chief psychological functions which have contributed to his social and professional identity. We will complete the description with an analysis of his behavior and advice about the best approach to adopt in dealing with life.

Talents and Abilities:

JIM enjoys wielding power and likes to feel as though his career gives him a certain control over people. He is secretive, and has an instinctive perception of the mysterious side of things. He thrives on difficulty and adversity, which bring out his best abilities. Sometimes he needs stress and hardship in order to find his motivation and develop his talents.

JIM has a taste for human relations and contact. It would be impossible for him to work effectively in a solitary setting. If his co-workers bring him the spark of dynamism and energy which he sometimes lacks, they will be all the more valuable to him.

JIM is sensitive to the surroundings and setting in which he works. In order to thrive, his talents require a certain intimacy or coziness. In fact, he might be most comfortable working from home. On the other hand, he may be extremely uncomfortable about encountering certain social situations which are unfamiliar or exceed his understanding.

It would probably be quite difficult for JIM to work within a professional setting which was too rigid or structured. He is extremely sensitive to his surroundings and the work environment, and is liable to be disturbed by his emotions. Only an activity which requires inspiration and intuition will enable him to find total self-fulfillment in work. Because of his emotional and artistic nature, his main asset is his imagination and his ability to understand other people, rather than an analytical mind. His modest ambitions, which may be accompanied by an absence of aggressiveness and determination, could become impairments to his professional future.

Ambitions and Motivations:

JIM does not always have a clear, precise vision of how to fit in to society. He tends to see society as a many-headed hydra which is nearly impossible to grasp and understand. As a result, when he plans his career, he will count most on his instincts and intuitions. To outside observers, the path he has chosen to success may sometimes seem twisted and irrational. Nevertheless, the quality of his human sensitivity and comprehension, combined with his keen intuitive insights, may lead him to success or popularity.

The words that are his keys to success:

Tactic - Suspicion - Finesse - Undercut - Strength - Baffle.

JIM may strive for social fulfillment by working in a service-related field, especially in the field of health care.

JIM will have to be dynamic and enterprising in his professional activity. Whatever field he chooses, he must not hesitate to put his best foot forward, and make a show of personal initiative and drive. The fear of committing himself totally, individually and emotionally, could be detrimental to his social success. On the other hand, excessive self-assurance, haste, or an uncontrollably competitive spirit could be a source of momentary difficulties. Moderation in all things!

Due to his sociability, his intellectual independence, and his progressive, innovative vision of society, which is imbued with a deep sense of social justice, JIM has a very unique approach to accomplishing his social and professional purpose. As a result, he is quite likely to succeed in an unconventional field. His network of friends will probably be an important factor in his career development.

JIM does not always agree with the social values which currently prevail as a gauge of success. As a result, he is not convinced he will be especially gratified by prosperity, popularity, wealth, and comfort. In his social relationships, it is difficult for him to feign indifference, or act out the role usually expected of him. On the other hand, he finds rewards in inner subjective expansion: the wealth and fortune which matter to him are of the moral or spiritual nature.

Difficulties in integrating and accepting prevailing social values may be related to a troubled childhood environment. JIM may still be experiencing the side effects of this past in his intellectual or emotional life today. Adversarial relationships, such as rivalry with his brothers and sisters, or problems with teachers and school authorities in adolescence may have undermined his confidence in his intellectual abilities or his skills of adaptation. As a result, he sometimes has a tendency to overestimate (or underestimate) the significance of his contribution to his current environment, and may be laboring under an inferiority complex.

Career Keywords:

Because he is so versatile, flexible, and proficient at exchange and negotiation, JIM may find professional fulfillment in an activity related to communication or trade. His lack of continuity and sometimes, of realism, as well as his struggle to control himself and attain a semblance of stability might, on the other hand, be drawbacks.

The desire for power and greatness is a strong motivation for JIM. He is fairly self-confident and may sometimes tend to be domineering.

The need for recognition and admiration is one of JIM's primary motivations. He is gratified by honors and respect, and aims for personal prestige.

Instinctive Motivations:

Need for movement, contact, exchange.

Primary Psychological Functions:

Seeing, hearing, understanding, speaking, moving.

Career Activities and Resources:

Speaking, reading, writing, translating, interpreting, expressing, exchanging, counting, circulating, moving, selling, adapting.

Symbolic Tools and Elements:

Pen, paper, press, books, phone, typewriter, adding machine, printing press; toys; means of locomotion.

Strongest Domains

Relations with Others:

JIM would be likely to marry a foreigner or a person capable of giving him guidance.

Other people tend to imitate JIM. They try to merge with his personality and demands, or influence him in a harmful way.

JIM is dynamic. He needs to show off and expend his energy.

JIM sometimes finds he has trouble fitting in to the social and professional world. His personal desires are an obstacle to the development of his social life, because they sometimes exceed the limitations of the reality principle commonly agreed upon in the outside world. Conversely, the limitations of the social world are liable to cramp his personal desires.

JIM tends to identify strongly with his childhood experiences. His past is deeply imprinted on him, and linked to an array of warm, positive impressions, but it also conveys the feelings of vulnerability and weakness inherent to childhood. Psychologically, JIM is ruled by the Mother-Image - that is, by a need for security and protection. The relationship he had with his mother, or a mother-figure, means a great deal to him. This image is associated with the idea of emotional security, but it may also be related to an insecurity about orality, the woman, and food. As an adult, JIM will probably find that women play an important role in his life. In everyday life, his mood follows the meandering of his feelings of security. He is sometimes hesitant and anxious; fairly passive, he is often borne along by events instead of causing them. Generally, he makes use of his subjectivity to perceive reality, and he is very sensitive. He likes change and novelty, as well as appearing in public, although he is sometimes shy.

Flexible and adaptable, JIM feels a need to analyze and interpret the situations he encounters, to learn the reason for his behavior. But since his mind never lingers long, he may sometimes be a little superficial.

People find JIM's attraction irresistible. Open, friendly, and congenial, he is also conscious of his charm, and uses it to seduce and sometimes take advantage of others. He is determined to lead a successful love life. However, since he approaches the matter with a fair amount of naivete and vanity, he is exposed to some failures. He must realize that his desire for self-satisfaction holds him back from yielding completely, and sometimes cuts him off from others.

JIM may have been subject to some traumatic experiences in childhood which left a mark on his personality. Perhaps his parents or teachers were overly authoritarian or rigid. If this occurred, he may have closed himself off in self-defense from an environment he found hostile; early in life, he may have developed a thick, tough, adult skin. Regardless of these environmental factors, and aside from what was just said, JIM has a fairly serious personality. He tends to be cold and at times intransigent. He sometimes refuses to admit he made a mistake. If he feels ashamed, he will immediately lose faith and confidence in himself, taking refuge in such tried-and-true values as conservatism and discipline for discipline's sake. Nevertheless, time is on his side, and gradually he may come closer to the perfection he desires. His life is subject to Saturn's orbit and may be segmented into significant seven-year periods.

Material Assets and Resources:

JIM's creative potential, his production, and his love of life are all closely related to his friends and associates.

JIM tends to want to attract notice wherever he goes.

Fairly individualistic and unconventional in the image he projects, JIM's personal expression is original and at times even eccentric. He identifies most strongly with ultra-modern, innovative groups of people. A feeling of dissatisfaction related to creation seems to induce him to violate convention and invent a new lifestyle. His attitude towards love may be ambivalent and paradoxical: he is the type who falls in love at first sight, but the glow quickly fades and he moves on. He will feel restless and somewhat unhappy until he has found his true soul mate. However, she had better not be hoping for a traditional wedding in white lace. If he has children, they will be exceptional. He will conceive of their education as a continual challenge to his creativity, and his own personal development may be troubled as a result.

Emotions and Creativity:

JIM sees himself as the expression of a powerful, creative spirit. He likes to work as an individual, and is sometimes blind to his own faults. Misunderstandings with those close to him are fairly frequent.

JIM has a marked tendency to externalize his energy. He is most inclined to try to impress others with his thought and rhetoric.

JIM has humanitarian aspirations.

JIM tries to accomplish his ideal by serving others.

JIM enjoys life, and his hunger for new horizons and ideas compels him to travel. He is very sociable, and finds human relations and communication extremely fulfilling. He is also ambitious, and pursues his goals tirelessly. Because his intellectual skills are keen and he learns quickly and easily, he has a great potential for advanced scholarship and post-graduate study. His mind is especially good at drawing parallels and composing a whole from various disparate elements, so people may see him as a sort of walking encyclopedia. However, he tends to spread himself too thin to be a gifted analyst, and he may sometimes be unable to distinguish matters of detail. His broad vision does give him a good sense of organization: as a result, he is apt to be able to manage a long-term project successfully, planning out the whole procedure and delegating responsibility to large groups of subordinates. He is fairly liberal-minded, with a deep sense of duty, and would be unable to betray his own ethics or violate the law.

Cultural and Intellectual Pursuits:

Life at home may sometimes be experienced as demanding, due to the many social and familial duties it entails.

JIM is somewhat marked by his heritage, but he will derive his own identity from himself in the here-and-now.

JIM has a secretive, enigmatic mentality. His attraction to the dark and hidden, and his interest in the mysteries of life and death may be related to childhood and adolescent anxieties he has yet to work through. JIM is eager for redemption, although he is still trapped in the mechanism of his guilt complex. His redemption will nevertheless require a transformation; in other words, he must challenge the ancestral values and roots with which he has always identified. Through this process of metamorphosis, everything that constituted the identity of his family will be understood in a new way. Let us note that his domestic life may also be improved as a result of this transformation.

Dominant Astrological Characteristics

The Moon is the first dominant in JIM's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

As the second light of the solar system, the Moon has always been associated with the Sun in the minds of men. The Moon and Sun are the primordial cosmic couple. This satellite of the Earth, which mysteriously waxes and wanes, has been compared to the Eternal Feminine principle, the mother hovering over her infant's cradle. Psychologically, the Moon is thus symbolic of the Mother and the Mother Image. This figure is a primordial element in the psyche of each individual. Depending on his nature, the mother figure may correspond to his biological mother, a grandmother, or a woman who cared for him in infancy and childhood. When a person reaches adulthood, this mother-figure and all the emotions and bonds associated with her may be transferred to something else: a wife, a companion, an institution, a church, corporation, or political movement, a cult, etc. In short, any individual or structure likely to take on the mother's duty of caring for and nurturing the vulnerable aspects of an individual. To be more down-to-earth, the Mother-Figure corresponds to the habits which were learned and then definitively incorporated into the individual's identity as he gradually became acculturated and progressed towards social independence. As a result, a strongly " lunar " personality often finds it difficult to adapt, and is uncomfortable outside the secure setting of familiar routines. Closely tied to his past, JIM may be unwilling to detach himself from it and embark on his life as an individual in the here-and-now. He still identifies somewhat with his inner child, and may display a child's capricious and unstable behavior, indulging in moodiness and indecision. His passivity may make him easily influenced, his sensitivity makes him subjective, and he hesitates to open up and lay his soul bare. In his daily life, psychic activity will rule : his imagination, memory, sensitivity, sensation, and sentiment nearly overwhelm his psyche.

Mercury is the second dominant in JIM's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

According to Greek myth, Mercury (or Hermes, whose name derives etymologically from the piles of rocks which marked trails and guided travelers) was the messenger of the gods. He carried orders from Olympus to the mortals on Earth. The child of the illegitimate union of Zeus with Maia, Mercury was born " unknown to the immortal gods " and had to win his place among them by trickery, cleverness, and cunning. This is why he became the vagabond deity of travelers and wanderers. He is the instinctive foe of the settled, who see him as an outcast roaming on the outskirts of society: a pariah, a thief, and a swindler. As mater of the sign of Gemini, the Twins, he symbolizes the brother - the alter-ego who teaches us as much as we teach him, and is associated with adolescence, a period of intense intellectual discovery. Mercury thus symbolizes lively, sparkling wit, mobility in any form, mental exchange and interaction. As a result, a person strongly ruled by Mercury is quite likely to be clever and skillful. If Mercury is " afflicted ", his intellectual velocity may sometimes become mere mental hyperactivity. In any case, his skills are a great resource in the social realm. He communicates easily and effectively, orally or in writing. His ability to unite and transmit would be a good resource in diplomatic or commercial endeavors.

Venus is the third dominant in JIM's astral chart. In the following paragraph, we shall indicate the significance of this fact:

In traditional astrology, Venus (or Aphrodite, her Greek name) is the planet of love. A source of universal attraction, this planet corresponds to the original urge which bonds two human beings together in love. Venus is thus both the magnetism which brings human beings together (not lust, which is symbolized by Mars, but the object which attracts lust) and the gift of love. This ambiguity is interpreted astrologically by the fact that Venus rules two houses of the Zodiac: in Taurus, Venus symbolizes the awakening to bodily lust, and in Libra, the bond of marriage. As a result, Venus may take on very different aspects depending on the individual's degree of awareness. Likewise, this ambiguity explains Aphrodite's equivocal conduct in Greek myth and her innumerable couplings and motherhood. Depending on the legend, she may embody brutal, passionate love (with Anteros), the wisdom of the heart which rescues from passion (Harmonia); she also becomes tenderness and purity (with Adonis), pure sexuality (with Eros), a transforming energy (with Vulcan), etc. Mistress of the Arts, she represents beauty, understanding, and peace. Psychologically, the individuals under the influence of Venus are struggling with their love instincts. This is why JIM cannot conceive of living without a personal emotional relationship to someone else and sometimes fears solitude and the encounter with himself. He is extremely attractive to others, and is a creator and artistic genius who seems to imbue all he touches with beauty and harmony. His artistic skills are obvious to the people around him, and may be applied to career endeavors. Pleasure, outings, seduction, love, and a thriving but sometimes superficial social life are the hallmarks of his life. Nevertheless, one day he will have to learn to give out of the goodness of his heart, and not as a means of seduction.

The First House is an area of the sky which is especially important in JIM's theme, because it contains several planets, including the one which rules his Rising Sign. In the following paragraph, we shall explain the general meaning of this fact.

According to tradition, this area is related to the domain of the INDIVIDUAL. It thus rules the subject himself, his character, talents, and abilities. The Rising Sign (at the peak of the First House) corresponds to the horizon line at the moment of birth. By outlining the exact location of the sunrise, it emphasizes the relationship between the cosmos and the Earth, the universal and the individual. In psychological terms, this point on the map of the sky which is represented by the zodiac refers to the necessity for individuation: the need to embody one's potential identity, or the essence of one's identity. When this area is especially prominent, it indicates that the subject's most significant experiences will concern his individuation: what he wants, what he is capable of, what he himself thinks, etc. - those are the important things. His destiny may be strewn with difficulties and occasional crises, and most of them will be related to a lack of differentiation. This will be the case despite a strong desire to assert an individual identity. It will thus be important for him to isolate and reveal his individuality and specificity by mastering his potentials and becoming unique. This uniqueness, which has nothing to do with mere originality or eccentricity, may justify his true purpose in living.

Synthesis and Advice

Many people mistakenly believe that astrology is too deterministic. However, as even the ancients said, " The stars incline but do not determine. " In fact, the astral chart is evidence that each of us is accountable only to himself for his life and his destiny. Neither Heaven nor the occasional Hell of human contacts can be held responsible for the situation down here on Earth. Astrology shows us that life is what we make of it: all we really obtain is what we decide to accomplish ourselves, of our own volition.

If JIM really wants to improve and transform himself, the first step is to become aware of the weaknesses which may be holding him back and preventing his evolution:
- His shallowness bordering on superficiality
- His lack of sincerity
- His indifference
- His frivolity
- His fear of commitment

For JIM, the main goal to aim for, in order to give purpose and meaning to his life, will be to reach out from himself to other people, while striving to see them the way they are instead of relying on his subjective vision of them or his intuition. To succeed in this endeavor, he must resist the temptations of pride and projection (seeing the other through himself). He must learn to cooperate, because honest teamwork with his friends and relations will be the source of his true strength.
